GST Rates in India 2026 (after GST 2.0)
From 22 September 2025 the main GST slabs are 5%, 18% and 40%. The old 12% and 28% slabs were removed for most goods — items moved mostly to 5% or 18%.
0% (Nil / exempt): Fresh milk, vegetables, fruits, eggs, education, healthcare services, individual life and health insurance.
5%: Everyday items such as butter, cheese, namkeen, packaged food, clothes and footwear up to ₹2,500 per piece; standalone restaurant food.
18% (standard): Most goods and services — mobile phones, TVs, ACs, small cars and bikes up to 350cc, cement, IT and professional services, clothes above ₹2,500 per piece.
40%: Luxury and "sin" goods — large cars and SUVs, aerated and sugary drinks.
Special rates: 3% on gold and silver jewellery, 0.25% on rough diamonds; tobacco and pan masala continue at 28% plus cess for now. Use "Other rate" above for these.
CGST + SGST vs IGST: For same-state sales, GST is split equally as CGST (Central) and SGST (State). For inter-state sales, the full amount is IGST.

Price × 1.18 — The 18% GST Shortcut
To add 18% GST, multiply the price by 1.18: ₹50,000 × 1.18 = ₹59,000 (GST ₹9,000). ₹7,500 × 1.18 = ₹8,850.
To remove 18% GST from a price that already includes it, divide by 1.18: ₹59,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹50,000. Don't subtract 18% — ₹59,000 − 18% gives ₹48,380, which is wrong.
Same idea for other rates: × 1.05 for 5%, × 1.40 for 40%, × 1.03 for 3%. The calculator shows the exact shortcut for whatever rate you pick.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add 18% GST to a price?
Multiply the price by 1.18. For example ₹50,000 × 1.18 = ₹59,000, of which ₹9,000 is GST (₹4,500 CGST + ₹4,500 SGST for a same-state sale).
How do I remove 18% GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Divide the price by 1.18. ₹59,000 ÷ 1.18 = ₹50,000 base price, so GST is ₹9,000. Subtracting 18% of ₹59,000 gives the wrong answer.
What are the GST slabs in 2026?
Since 22 September 2025 the main slabs are 5%, 18% and 40%, with 0% for exempt items. Special rates remain for a few items, such as 3% on jewellery and 28% plus cess on tobacco and pan masala.
What is the GST rate on clothes?
Clothes priced up to ₹2,500 per piece attract 5% GST; above ₹2,500 per piece the rate is 18%.
