CGST + SGST vs IGST — When to Use Which

CGST + SGST (Intra-state): When both seller and buyer are in the same state. Tax is split equally — half goes to Central Government (CGST), half goes to State Government (SGST). For example: seller in Maharashtra, buyer in Maharashtra — apply CGST + SGST.

IGST (Inter-state): When seller and buyer are in different states, or for exports. The full tax goes to Central Government as IGST, which is later distributed. For example: seller in Maharashtra, buyer in Delhi — apply IGST.

This tool auto-detects which tax type to apply when you select the seller's state and buyer's state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this GST invoice legally valid? +
This tool generates invoices that contain all mandatory fields required under the CGST Act 2017. The invoice is legally valid when you fill in accurate information — your correct GSTIN, customer details, HSN codes, and tax calculations. Always verify your GSTIN and HSN codes are correct. We recommend consulting a CA for complex transactions.
What is HSN code and where do I find mine? +
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is a 4-8 digit code that classifies goods. SAC (Service Accounting Code) classifies services. You can find your HSN code on the GST Council website or by searching "HSN code for [your product]" on Google. Common examples: HSN 6105 for T-shirts, HSN 8471 for computers, SAC 9983 for IT services, SAC 9961 for retail trade services.
Do I need a GSTIN to issue a GST invoice? +
Yes. Only GST-registered businesses with a valid GSTIN can issue GST tax invoices. If your annual turnover is below ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for services), you are not required to register for GST and should use a regular invoice instead. Use our Simple Invoice Generator for non-GST invoices.
Is my business data saved anywhere? +
Your business details (name, GSTIN, address) are saved in your browser's local storage so you don't have to re-enter them every time. This data never leaves your device and is not sent to any server. You can clear it anytime using the Clear All button.
What is Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM)? +
Under RCM, the buyer pays GST to the government instead of the seller. This applies in specific situations — like when buying from unregistered suppliers above certain thresholds, or for specific goods/services notified by the government (like legal services, GTA services). For most regular business transactions, RCM does not apply. Select "No" if you are unsure.
