What is RTI and How to Use It
The Right to Information Act, 2005 gives every Indian citizen the right to request information from any public authority โ central government, state government, municipal bodies, courts, and public sector companies. The public authority must respond within 30 days (48 hours for matters involving life or liberty).
What you can ask: Any information held by a public authority โ documents, files, records, data, contracts, expenditure, audit reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, and more. You can also request certified copies of documents.
Fee: Central RTI applications require a fee of โน10 payable by IPO, demand draft, bankers cheque, or cash at the counter. BPL (Below Poverty Line) applicants are exempt. Many state governments have different fees.
First appeal: If you are not satisfied with the response or if there is no response within 30 days, you can file a First Appeal with the First Appellate Authority of the same department. Second appeal goes to the Central/State Information Commission.
