What changing DPI does — and does not do

DPI is a number stored in the image file that tells printers how many pixels to put in each inch. Changing it does not add detail or change the pixels: a 600 × 600 photo stays 600 × 600. It changes the print size — 600 pixels at 300 DPI print 2 inches wide, at 200 DPI 3 inches.

Example: the IBPS PO 2026 notice asks for the left thumb impression at 240 × 240 pixels and 200 DPI, and the hand-written declaration at 800 × 400 pixels and 200 DPI (IBPS PO 2026 notice (checked 26 September 2026)).

Some forms check the DPI value. This tool sets it in the JPEG header (JFIF) and, for phone photos, in the EXIF data too, because Windows shows the EXIF value first. PNG files get the standard pHYs value.

Questions people ask

Does changing DPI improve the photo quality?
No. DPI only tells the printer how big to print the pixels. The picture and the number of pixels stay the same. For a sharper print at a size, you need more pixels, not a higher DPI number.
How do I change a photo from 72 DPI to 300 DPI?
Choose the photo, tap 300 and download. The new file says 300 DPI; its pixels are unchanged, so it will print smaller than at 72 DPI.
How can I check the DPI of a photo?
Windows: right-click the file → Properties → Details → Horizontal resolution. Mac: open it in Preview → Tools → Show Inspector. Or drop it on this page — it shows the DPI now.
Does it work for PNG?
Yes. PNG files get the standard pHYs value. WEBP and other formats are saved as JPG first, because forms rarely read DPI from them.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The file is changed in your browser and never leaves your device.
