How it is worked out
- Four sides + diagonal: the diagonal cuts the plot into two triangles; each triangle's area comes from its three sides (Heron's formula), and the two are added. This is exact for any four-sided plot whose corners point outward.
- Why the diagonal? Four sides alone do not fix the shape — the same four sides can make a rectangle or a squashed plot with much less area. The page also shows each corner's angle so you can see how far the plot is from a rectangle.
- Four sides only: average of the front and back × average of the two sides. It is close only when the corners are near 90°; it is always equal to or more than the true area of such a plot. Use it as a rough figure.
- Units: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 sq yd (gaj) = 9 sq ft, 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft, 1 hectare = 10,000 sq m. Bigha, kanal, marla and biswa differ from State to State — use the Land Unit Converter.
- For a sale deed, mutation or a dispute, the measurement by the patwari / revenue surveyor and the records decide; this is a check for your own use.

Questions people ask
How do I find the area of a plot with four unequal sides?
Measure the four sides and one diagonal (from one corner to the opposite corner). The diagonal splits the plot into two triangles; the page works out each from its three sides and adds them. That is exact.
Can I get the area from the four sides only?
Only roughly. Four sides do not fix the shape — the same sides can enclose different areas. The page offers the usual rough method (average of opposite sides) and says how far it can be off; measure a diagonal for the true area.
How many square feet is one gaj?
One gaj (square yard) is 9 square feet. One acre is 43,560 square feet and one hectare is 10,000 square metres.
What about bigha, kanal or marla?
Those units differ from State to State. Take the square feet or square metres from here and convert them with the Land Unit Converter.
