Indian Resume Format — What Makes It Different

Indian resumes follow a different format from Western CVs. Understanding these differences helps you create a resume that matches what Indian employers and HR managers expect.

What Indian Employers Expect

Photo: Most Indian companies, especially in manufacturing, banking, government, and traditional industries, expect a passport-size photo on the resume. Tech startups and MNCs are more flexible, but including a professional photo rarely hurts.

Date of Birth: Indian job applications almost always require date of birth. Government jobs, PSUs, and many private companies have age limits and need to verify eligibility.

Languages Known: Multilingual ability is valued in India. Include all languages you know — Hindi, English, and regional languages — with your proficiency level.

Declaration: A personal declaration at the end ("I hereby declare that the information provided is true...") is a standard part of the Indian resume format, especially for government and PSU applications.

Marital Status and Nationality: Optional but commonly included in Indian resumes, particularly for government and banking sector applications.

Tips for Freshers (0-2 Years Experience)

If you have no work experience, emphasize your education, academic projects, internships, certifications, and skills. Include your percentage or CGPA prominently. Add relevant coursework and technical skills that match the job description. A strong career objective statement at the top is especially important for freshers.
