What to do, in order
- When you move out: take dated photos or a video of every room, return the keys against a written note or message, and keep the last rent and bill receipts.
- Ask in writing: send this letter on WhatsApp and email, and by registered post or speed post. Keep the proof of sending. Many landlords pay at this step.
- Check your agreement: it usually says when the deposit is returned and what can be deducted. Put that clause in the letter.
- Still not paid? The next step is a legal notice through a lawyer, and then a case in the civil court to recover the money. Some states have a Rent Authority under their own tenancy law — check what applies in your state. Your district legal services authority can give free legal aid if you qualify.

How do I ask my landlord for my security deposit back?

Can the landlord deduct money from the deposit?
