How the RBI Ombudsman works (RB-IOS, 2026)

  1. Bank first. Complain to the bank / company and keep proof. You can go to the RBI Ombudsman if they don’t reply in 30 days (or a longer RBI, NPCI or card-network time where one applies), or reply and don’t solve it — within 90 days of that date or of their last reply, whichever is later.
  2. File: online at cms.rbi.org.in (paste the text above), by email to crpc@rbi.org.in, or by post to the Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre, RBI, Central Vista, Sector 17, Chandigarh 160017 (print, sign and attach the letter). The 14448 helpline gives information but doesn’t take complaints.
  3. Covered: banks (commercial, RRBs, co-operative), NBFCs registered with RBI (not housing finance companies), wallet / prepaid card companies and credit information companies. No fee; no limit on the amount in dispute; compensation up to ₹30 lakh for consequential loss and up to ₹3 lakh for time, expenses and harassment.
  4. Not taken: complaints not first made to the bank, filed too early or too late, already before a court or the Ombudsman, or about the bank’s commercial judgment. A police case is not counted as the same grievance.
  5. Award not acceptable? An appeal lies with the Appellate Authority within 30 days of receiving the Award.
  6. Source: RBI FAQ on the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 (updated 1 July 2026, checked 30 Oct 2026). This is a draft to help you, not legal advice.
