Is a rent receipt mandatory for HRA claim?
Yes. If your monthly rent exceeds ₹3,000, you must submit rent receipts to your employer to claim HRA exemption. If annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh, you must also provide your landlord's PAN.
Does the landlord need to sign the receipt?
Yes. Rent receipts should be signed by the landlord. For cash payments above ₹5,000, a revenue stamp (₹1) is required along with the landlord's signature. Digital or bank transfer receipts do not require a revenue stamp.
Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to a parent?
Yes, you can pay rent to parents and claim HRA. The rent must actually be paid (bank transfer preferred), and the parent must declare it as rental income in their tax return. Rent to spouse is not allowed.
