What to do, in order
- Complain to the insurance company first — to its grievance officer, by email or its website, and keep the complaint number. The Council for Insurance Ombudsmen says the company “should deal with your complaint within 30 days”.
- Not satisfied, or no reply in 30 days? Complain to the Insurance Ombudsman — online at cioins.co.in (Lodge Complaint), or by post / email to the Ombudsman office for your area. There is no fee.
- Limits: within 1 year of the rejection or partial settlement; claim value up to ₹50 lakh including expenses; and the matter must not be before any other forum, court or arbitrator. It covers personal and group policies (life, health, general, motor) and complaints about delay, full or partial rejection, premium, policy terms and servicing.
- Keep proof: policy, claim form, rejection letter, bills, reports, and your complaint to the company.
- Sources checked 1 Nov 2026 (Council for Insurance Ombudsmen). This is a draft to help you, not legal advice; for large claims or a court case, see a lawyer.
