The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It works by breaking work into 25-minute focused intervals (called "pomodoros") separated by short 5-minute breaks. After 4 pomodoros, you take a longer 15-30 minute break.
Why it works: Our brains focus best in short bursts. The timer creates urgency, breaks prevent burnout, and the structured rhythm builds momentum. Students using this technique report completing 2-3x more work in the same time.
Tips for students: Turn off your phone during study time. One task per session. Write down distracting thoughts rather than acting on them. Start with just 2-3 sessions per day and build up.
